What we buy

• Sterling silver — flatware sets and odd pieces, tea and coffee services, trays, candlesticks, bowls, hollowware. American, English and Continental. Monogrammed is fine. Weighted and plated pieces too, priced accordingly.
• Furniture — 18th, 19th and early 20th-century case pieces, chairs, tables, desks and mirrors with good lines and honest wear. Painted, gilt and Continental pieces especially.
• Art — oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints; portraits, landscapes, still lifes and marine scenes; period gilt frames, even empty ones. More on art.
• Porcelain and glass — blue-and-white, export, Delft and faience, Continental and English porcelain, crystal and cut glass.
• Lighting, clocks and objects — lamps, sconces, chandeliers, mantel and bracket clocks, bronzes, boxes, books, garden ornament and the odd beautiful thing.

How an offer works

We look at the piece — in the shop, from your photographs, or at the house — and tell you what it is and what we'd pay. The offer is in writing, it's explained, and it stands for a reasonable time so you can think it over. If we think a piece would do better at auction or on consignment, we'll say so, even though it means we don't buy it today.

If you accept, you're paid immediately and we handle pickup. No fees, no waiting for a sale, no storage.

Selling silver flatware and hollowware

Silver is where we see the most confusion. Sterling is marked — "sterling," "925," or a set of hallmarks — and is bought on its own merits as an object, not just by weight. Plated silver, "EPNS," "silverplate," and unmarked pieces are worth much less. Weighted candlesticks and trophies are mostly filler. Bring the whole set, including the odd serving pieces; complete or near-complete sets of good patterns bring far more than the sum of their spoons. And please, don't polish it first.
