What you'll find on the walls

• Oil paintings — portraits, landscapes, still lifes, marine and sporting pictures, mostly 18th to early 20th century, European and American.
• Works on paper — watercolors, drawings, engravings and hand-colored prints, botanical and natural-history plates.
• Period gilt frames — including empty ones, which designers snap up faster than the pictures.
• Mirrors — gilt, painted, Venetian, trumeau and the plain old looking glass with a good bevel.

We buy pictures for the picture, not the name — a good anonymous portrait with presence will always find a wall here. When something arrives with a signature and a story worth chasing, we chase it, and if it belongs in a bigger room we say so. How we place paintings at auction.

Buying and consigning art

If you have paintings, prints, frames or mirrors to sell, bring them in or send photographs — the front, the signature, and the back with its labels and inscriptions. The gallery we live in

Anodyne Antiques shares its rooms with Sharon Lynch Collections, a gallery of original floral paintings by the artist Sharon Lynch — peonies, tulips and hydrangeas on cobalt and turquoise, shown alongside the blue-and-white porcelain and Delft that inspire them. The pairing of 18th-century pictures and 21st-century canvases is the point of the place, and it makes for a very good hour on Shirley Street.
